Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore the importance of composition in elementary general music classrooms, and the role of the teacher in demonstrating creative and compositional techniques. By positioning creation at the center of our curriculum, we are able to build the other core curriculum goals: perform, respond and connect- around this unique tenant of our programs. The process of experimentation for teachers’ using their own compositions leads instructors to better prepare themselves to facilitate composition instruction and activities in the elementary music curriculum. When teachers share their personal creations, they are validating the act of composing for their students. The paper addresses how composition fits into various elementary music methodologies and approaches. There are three compositions shared at the end with ideas on how these experiences can be incorporated into music classrooms.
