Abstract
Instrumental music programs face significant threats to their long-term viability due to high dropout rates among students navigating the challenging initial years of instrumental instruction. Sustaining student participation is vital for the growth and retention of instrumental music programs. This commentary examines the benefits of band participation and factors that affect the retention of young musicians. Music selection can be used as a tool to improve student engagement and foster retention. The practical application of this research is demonstrated through an original musical arrangement designed for a mixed-ability ensemble that features a Main Part that is about a Grade 1.5 with a supportive Beginner Part that is a Grade 0.5.
