Abstract
While a small percentage of college women meet diagnostic criteria for eating disorders and substance-related disorders, research and assessment of college student health suggest that a much larger percentage of college women engage in disordered eating behaviors and high risk substance abuse. Academic and interpersonal stressors unique to college campuses may put women at increased risk of using food, exercise and substance as means of coping with stress and negative feelings. Currently there are no available treatment models for working with co-occurring disordered eating and substance concerns in a university setting. The objective of this doctoral project is provide an eight-week psychoeducational group curriculum that can be used by college counseling center staff to assist women who are struggling with co-occurring disordered eating and substance use.
