Abstract
The social work supervisor is well positioned to address the risk of burnout, compassion fatigue, secondary or vicarious trauma, job dissatisfaction, and turnover for supervisees, yet little is known about the training or approach of social work supervisors for this responsibility. The purpose of this Banded Dissertation is to explore the role of the social work supervisor in supporting the health and wellness of supervisees and to examine the training of social work supervisors to support social work wellbeing. Product One is a conceptual paper reviewing the literature for the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with supervisors known to positively impact wellbeing, job satisfaction, and retention. Product Two is a research-based article based on a textual analysis of MSW supervision syllabi exploring if and how MSW programs are preparing social work supervisors to support the wellbeing of supervisees. Product Three of this Banded Dissertation is a conference poster presentation on Product One. Discussed across all three products are implications for social work researchers and educators.
