A Grief Psychotherapy Support Group for Individuals Coping With the Loss of Unemployment

Unemployment can impact a person’s mental health through a wide array of psychological and physical symptoms. Research has shown that conceptualizing clients through the lens of grief and loss can be valuable. Furthermore, a group psychotherapy method for job loss is beneficial because it provides opportunities for members to increase social support and find better ways to cope with the grieving process of unemployment effectively. The goal of this project is to expand on the practice guidelines by creating a training manual to aid mental health clinicians in the formation of a psychotherapy unemployment support group. The proposed manual serves to fill a gap in training for losses such as unemployment and create more awareness within the area. As a result of this contribution, mental health clinicians will be better prepared to provide support for this unique population.
