Abstract
In Head and Heart, Garry Wills's panoramic history of American Christianity, the essential dichotomy is between the Evangelicalism of revivals and charismatic preachers (a Christianity of the heart) and Enlightenment-influencedmovements from deism to transcendentalism to modern liberalism (a Christianity of the head). The antebellum Protestant denominations fractured over slavery; early-twentieth-century fundamentalism was discredited by Prohibition and by the Scopes trial; and today's Religious Right angered many by trying to impose "faith-based" policy in areas from personal medical decisions (for example, the Terri Schiavo controversy) to government social programs (for example, President George W Bush's faith-based initiative).
