- Author/Creator
- John Paul Russo
- Publication Details
- The Italian in Modernity, pp.393-433
- Annotation
- Close reading of the Italian aspects of Across the River and into the Trees. Russo identifies Venice as the novel s interpretive key and reads passages considering the city s symbolism by exploring myths about Venice, particularly its feminine representation and its embodiment in Renata. Provides a biographical comparison between Hemingway and D Annunzio, suggesting that Hemingway s use of the Venetian motif was derived from D Annunzio s Il fuoco (1990). Russo pinpoints Hemingway s fascination with the Italian hero beginning in his early stories The Woppian Way and The Mercenaries.
