- Annotation
- On the rationality and motivation of the rebel. Compares macro and micro social theories of revolution to Hemingway s diverse treatment of the rebel hero in Death in the Afternoon, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and the Sea, contending that Hemingway s heroes are ordinary individuals who are psychologically and emotionally transformed by their experiences. Conklin argues that the author structures his heroes not as outcomes of ideology, but as individuals frustrated with conditions of inequality and oppression and thus driven to act.
