Abstract
This chapter defines sustainable work, including voluntary extra-role and required in-role behaviors. It also discusses the implications of behaviors that are individual oriented versus those that are system oriented. Sustainability in higher education institutions (HEIs) may be best supported when it is thought of as a core competency (a combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values) that is expected across all jobs. The chapter presents a variety of potential sustainability competencies and ends by illustrating how performance management systems can integrate a sustainability competency to foster sustainable behavior among employees.
