- Discusses his approach to teaching social and cultural issues found in Summer People to students at the University of Puerto Rico who are intimately familiar with the romanticized perspectives of seasonal visitors. Herlihy-Mera contextualizes culturally and historically how Hemingway s impressions and those of his fictional characters were informed by participation in the early twentieth-century cottage-ing movement (i.e., the seasonal influx of affluent urban dwellers roughing it in northern Michigan and elsewhere). He also considers the significance of the physical distance of Paris for Hemingway in composing the story. Concludes with a list of small group activities and a writing prompt related to place.
