- Title
- Shadow Rider: The Hemingway Hero as Western Archetype
- Author/Creator
- James Plath
- Publication Details
- Hemingway and the Natural World, pp.69-86
- Annotation
- Critically analyzes the western formula to argue that, although the Hemingway code hero is not strictly derived from the western hero, he does resemble the hero of western myth. Plath draws numerous parallels between both types of protagonist, primarily through a comparison of Jordan in For Whom the Bell Tolls to Owen Wister s hero in The Virginian (1902).
