Abstract
One of the goals of SEM-R is to increase student enjoyment of and interest in reading. An excellent way to achieve this goal is with a high-interest read aloud, or Book Hook, during Phase 1 of SEM-R, When discussing SEM-R with teachers, we ask them to think about a Phase 1 Book Hook as a movie trailer for a book. In the same way a movie trailer is designed to inform, engage, and entice audience members to see a particular movie, a Book Hook is designed to educate, inform, engage, and entice a student to read.
