- Title
- "One of the filthiest books of the year." Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises as Banned Book
- Author/Creator
- Donald A. Daiker
- Publication Details
- Hemingway's Earliest Heroes: Nick Adams and Jake Barnes, pp.291-300
- Annotation
- Surveys the novel's censured history, questioning validity of objections based on offensive language, sexual content, and anti-Semitism. Daiker contends that the nature of Hemingway's profanity is mild and that although there is sexual content, adultery is far from rewarded and nearly all sexual activity happens offstage. In responding to charges of anti-Semitism, Daiker characterizes the novel as "mildly" anti-Semitic, with most slurs coming from Bill and unsupported by Jake. In closing, Daiker comes out swinging at Hemingway's contemporary reviewers who criticized the novel as superficial, pointing to its complexity, richness, and continued relevance to modern-day readers for perennial lessons of determination and perseverance as evidence to the contrary. Forthcoming in Midwestern Miscellany: Banned in the Heartland. Edited by John Rohrkemper. 51 (2024) East Lansing, MI: Midwestern Press.
