- Annotation
- Biography of Lynes, an openly gay photographer who rose to prominence in the 1930s and 40s. Chapter covers the young Lynes's reluctant 1926 return to his family home in New Jersey, far away from his Parisian creative circle and mentor Gertrude Stein. Discusses Lynes's early withdrawal from Yale and growing interest in the publishing industry, including his work on a series of pamphlets under the imprint of As Stable Press, featuring contributions by Stein, Jean Cocteau, and Hemingway among others. Notes Hemingway's derogatory handwritten comments about gay contributors on the "Today is Friday" pamphlet that Hemingway gave to Sara and Gerald Murphy, suggesting Hemingway was unaware of Lynes's sexual orientation when he allowed Lynes to publish his short dramatic play.
