Annotation: On Hemingway s evolving style distinguishing three narrative phases of the author s career. Quick begins with his early uncertain and confrontational period during which the author parodied others. This was followed by his reconfiguration of conventional narrative patterns, which eventually led to his decline into mechanical paralleling of sources. Draws on The Torrents of Spring, The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, and The Old Man and the Sea to elaborate on each phase and offers examples from his literary inheritance, including Sherwood Anderson, W. H. Hudson, Dante, and Virgil. Concludes that Hemingway s unique and lasting narrative legacy is his use of omission.
