Abstract
This chapter presents a vignette that illustrates several challenging dilemmas encountered when identifying and assessing problems of professional competence (PPC). PPC are identified in many ways. A problem may be identified by a troubling one-time behavior by a trainee, or it might be a result of several behaviors that occur over time. Problems may be observed in informal situations or may be found through formal means of identification, such as patterns of poor client care discovered when reviewing multiple clinical therapy recordings. Identification of PPC refers to the ability to label and describe the PPC. Assessment of a trainee does not occur in isolation. The relationship between a trainee and their training program is bidirectional in that they must work collaboratively, each playing their unique role, toward the development of the trainee. Similar to the trainee-training program microsystem, trainees and supervisors at a training site have a bidirectional relationship.
