- New Critical Essays on Kurt Vonnegut, pp.167-192
- Annotation
- Acknowledging Vonnegut s consistent criticism of Hemingway, Broer examines thematic similarities and differences between the two war narratives, arguing that they share a common focus on the mental and physical wounds caused by war and the subsequent quest to find order in a chaotic world. Laments that Vonnegut, at the time of his criticism of the ultra-masculine Hemingway persona, did not have access to the creatively and morally evolved Hemingway of the posthumous works more willing to examine his deepest anxieties, much like Vonnegut.
