Abstract
This chapter explores the intersection of Christian humanism and digital technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI). In asserting its centrality in Catholic social teaching, I underscore the need for a Christian humanism that goes beyond secularism and argue for a transcendent worldview. The chapter delves into the role of contemplation, an element of Christian spirituality, in shaping ethical considerations for AI and digital technologies as they might be relevant to business ethics. By emphasizing contemplation, I support a human-centered approach that aligns technology with values such as human dignity, freedom, subsidiarity, solidarity, and the preferential option for the poor. The chapter proposes contemplation to navigate the challenges posed by AI, fostering a mindful and ethical integration of technology in line with Christian humanistic principles. The notion of contemplation was transformed over time. The distinction between active and contemplative life, introduced by Gregory the Great, evolved through figures like Thomas Aquinas, Ignatius of Loyola, and Josemaría Escrivá. I discuss contemplation's role in shaping socio-economic realities according to the three most recent popes. Finally, I explore contemplation in the context of AI in business, following the dual axes of God and human-centeredness.
