- Annotation
- Explores numerous similarities between Santiago and the giant marlin, characterizing them as equally matched opponents in strength and resolve. Contends that while their initial battle ends in the death of the marlin, Santiago's subsequent battle with nature, which strips him of his catch, ends in the death of his spirit and confidence. Petrucci concludes that these struggles at sea mark only the beginning of a deep inner battle for Santiago who, after returning home empty-handed, must overcome his feelings of failure to fish again.
