- Annotation
- Pedagogical approach illuminating the novel s problematic racial representation by focusing on the intersecting themes of race, sexuality, and masculinity. Holcomb foregrounds Hemingway s portrayal of the two minor black characters, the jazz drummer and the prizefighter, offering suggestions for contextualization drawing on Toni Morrison s Playing in the Dark (1992) and comparison using two Harlem Renaissance texts, Claude McKay s Home to Harlem (1928) and Gwendolyn Bennett s Wedding Day (1926). Concludes with topics for writing and discussion.
