- Including all known surviving letters from 1926 through April 1929, this is the third volume of an estimated seventeen volume series of Hemingway s correspondence. On a personal level, the letters cover the collapse of his first marriage to Hadley Richardson, his second marriage to Pauline Pfeiffer, the birth of their son Patrick, relocation to Key West from Paris, and his father s suicide. On a professional level, they document his progress from the literary expatriate scene to the mainstream market with the publication of The Torrents of Spring, The Sun Also Rises, Men Without Women, and the writing of A Farewell to Arms. While his editor, Max Perkins, receives the lion s share of correspondence, other literary recipients include F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, and John Dos Passos. Helpful endnotes follow each of the 345 letters, identifying responses to people, places, and events. Editorial introductions survey the scope of Hemingway s correspondence and letter-writing habits, and trace the progression of his literary career.
