- Annotation
- Collecting all known surviving letters from January 1932 through May 1934, this is the fifth volume of an estimated seventeen volume series of Hemingway's correspondence. On a personal level, letters cover his family life with Pauline Pfeiffer and sons, hunting in Wyoming, Arkansas, and Africa, fishing in the Gulf Stream, views on fellow writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein, and friendship with Jane Mason. Professionally, they document the completion and publication of Death in the Afternoon, composition and publication of Winner Take Nothing, and contributions to Esquire magazine. Meticulous annotations accompany most of the 393 letters, identifying references to people, places, and events. Supplemented with a Chronology, Calendar of Letters, Roster of Correspondents, extensive index, and other useful materials.
