- Title
- Paris or Paname: Hemingway s Expatriate Nationalism
- Author/Creator
- Jeffrey Herlihy
- Annotation
- On the function of place and cultural displacement in Hemingway s novels, including The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Across the River and into the Trees, and The Old Man and the Sea. Herlihy examines Hemingway s thematic preoccupation with foreign settings in relation to his protagonists sense of identity, expatriate experience, and failed attempts at assimilation. Argues that the Hemingway hero, while longing for redefinition within a foreign culture, is unable to completely overcome his origins and thus fails to fully integrate into that foreign culture.
