- Title
- Hemingway and Ecocriticism
- Author/Creator
- G. Srilatha
- Annotation
- Reading through the lens of ecocriticism, Srilatha discerns a strong conservationist ethos running throughout much of Hemingway's short fiction despite the author's lifelong passion for hunting and fishing. Examines Hemingway's theme of mutual dependency between characters and their natural surroundings to reveal the impact of environmental degradation on both nature and humans. Opens with an introduction to ecocritical theory before moving into an autobiographical survey of Hemingway's close connection to the natural world, beginning with his early years in Michigan. Topics range from deep ecology to ecofeminism and ecocide. Stories examined include "Cat in the Rain," "The Three-Day Blow," "Up in Michigan," "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," "Big Two-Hearted River," and The Old Man and the Sea. Includes bibliography (with most sources published prior to 2000). No index.
