- Study of the complex and diverse expression of masculinity found in Hemingway s works. Fantina draws on recent theories of literary masochism (sexual submission of the male body to the female body) in his examination of Hemingway and his male characters relationships with women. While stopping short of proclaiming Hemingway progressive in his views on gender politics, Fantina s analysis does reveal Hemingway s sustained probing of the oppressive nature of traditional gender roles throughout his canon, including The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Garden of Eden.
